The Animal Protective League cannot take in all of the dogs and cats in need of help, due to space and funding limitations. Many loving, wonderful animals are at county animal control facilities where they face the danger of being euthanized. This page is devoted to some of those animals, being housed at Sangamon County Animal Control in Springfield.

THESE PETS ARE NOT APL ANIMALS. They ARE NOT at our shelter. We have not met them, so all of the information provided has been supplied by staff and volunteers at Sangamon County Animal Control. If you are interested in meeting a dog or cat on this page ... use the contact information provided below. APL is in no way responsible for the accuracy of the information provided to us. We are posting animals on this page as a public service to the community.

There I was, lost and running loose in traffic on a busy street, when a nice AC officer rescued me. My name is Gabby, and although I'm safe and warm here and get lots of attention from the staff and volunteers, it's not the same as living in a real home. I'm a VERY pretty young Spaniel mix, not even a year old yet. I'm playful, affectionate and, with just a little training, I'll be a perfect member of your family. Please come meet me; ask for # 1-079.
URGENT ... URGENT ... URGENT

My name is Fiji, and when you adopt me, you'll definitely have a one-of-a-kind "designer dog." Just look at my gorgeous brindle spots and patches (and, of course, my pretty face). I was found running loose, and since no one came to bail me out, that means YOU could be my new special human. I'm about two years old, friendly, and pretty mellow for a young girl. When you offer me a treat, I take it gently from your hand. I get along fine with other pets, in case you have any. Let's go for a walk together or spend some time in one of the visitor's rooms to see if we're a good match. (Ask for # 12-128.)

A handsome young man like me certainly shouldn't have been allowed to run loose and get lost, but that's what happened. My name is Rand, and a lady found me in Auburn. She had an older dog of her own and wasn't able to keep me, so I'm here at SCAC auditioning for a new home. The first thing you'll notice are my alert, intelligent eyes and my striking markings. I'm what's called a Red Heeler; most ACDs are Blue Heelers, so that makes me special. I'm not even a year old yet, but I already walk VERY politely on my leash, sit and pose for photos, and I love hanging out with my human friends. I'm quite intelligent and active, so I'd like a family who will jog with me, or play fetch, or even take me to agility courses. Please come meet me; ask for # 1-299.

Just take me to the play yard and you'll see what a fun-loving young guy I am! My name is Rocco, and I'm 18 months old ... so I'm kinda like a big puppy at heart. The volunteers here at SCAC are teaching me to walk properly on my leash, and there's this game called "fetch" that I'm practicing. Maybe you and I can practice together. I don't know why my owner didn't want me any longer, but if YOU like big, playful dogs, put "Meet Rocco" on your list of things to do. You're gonna love me. (Ask for # 1-428.)

URGENT ... URGENT ... URGENT

I'm a pretty girl named Bounce, and I'd love to meet you. I'm about five years old and, although I love attention, I'm not the least bit demanding. I'd be perfectly content just hanging out with you, sitting at your feet, watching TV in the evenings. I had a microchip when I came here, so I know that I had an owner ... but she didn't come to bail me out when I wound up here at SCAC. I'd appreciate a second chance with someone who will love me; someone who won't let me run loose and get lost again. I PROMISE to be your very best friend. Please come meet me; ask for # 12-163.

My name is Ziggy, and I'm an adorable young girl whose owner left me here at SCAC to find a new home. I have no clue why. He said that I'm good with kids and other pets. I'm just a baby, only 14 weeks old, so this would be a perfect time for you to adopt me and get me settled into my forever home. Come meet me and let's go to one of the play yards so I can show you how much fun I am! (Ask for # 1-278.)
