Learn how to give to APL using your investments, Qualified Charitable Distributions, and Donor Advised Fund

DAFs (Donor-Advised Fund):

Interested in finding a new, easy way to give to the Animal Protective League? Consider opening a Donor Advised Fund or DAF. Already have a DAF and want to learn how to use it to recommend grants / make donations to APL? Keep reading!

First, what is a DAF? A DAF is a tax-efficient investment account that allows you to support the charitable
organizations that you care about most. For many families, starting a donor advised fund can be a great decision. A few of the largest reasons that people choose a DAF are:

1.) Flexibility in making gifts: After initially funding the DAF, donors can decide when to recommend grants, allowing them to spread out their gifts over time

2.) Estate Planning: You can name successors on a DAF and keep your legacy of caring for animals in need at APL alive long after you’ve passed.

3.) Tax Advantage on investment growth: The funds inside of your DAF can be invested, and will grow tax-free until grants are made.

4.) Tax Deduction - It's always best to work with a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), but in many cases, there is an immediate tax deduction for contributing to a DAF!

Opening a Donor Advised Fund is relatively easy! First, choose where you would like to open a charitable giving account. Some options include Fidelity Charitable (notably user-friendly), Schwab Charitable, and Vanguard Charitable. There are some firms that allow you to work with a financial advisor on your DAF, as well.

Once you’ve opened a Donor Advised Fund in the charitable giving account of your choice, you can get started by contributing cash and/or appreciated assets. The information you will need to make a gift to the Animal Protective League will vary based on which charitable giving account you’ve opened your DAF with. Here is some of the information you will most commonly need.

Donating Your Investment(s) to APL Helps Animals in Need AND Your Pocket Book

When your investments are doing well, you feel amazing! ... and then capital gains tax swoops in to take that feeling away. But we have a solution that can help you avoid paying those pesky taxes and make a difference in the lives of vulnerable animals.

If your portfolio contains investments with a large unrealized gain (value of investments have increased significantly since the purchase date and you have not yet sold), you should consider the benefits of donating the stock directly to a 501c-3 organization like Animal Protective League (APL)!

Since APL is a tax-exempt organization, we can sell the stock without having to pay capital gains tax on it and receive the proceeds as a donation.

Oh, and it gets better!

You can also qualify for potential income tax-deductions since you made a charitable contribution!

Interested in giving to APL through your investments? Let us know by reaching out to APL's Executive Director, Deana Corbin, at dcorbin@apl-shelter.org or APL's Development Director, Alexis Haven, at ahaven@apl-shelter.org. We will provide you with the DTC instructions and work with you to make it happen!

Qualified Charitable Distributions Can Help You Save Money AND The Lives of Needy Animals

Are you 70.5 years of age or older? If so, you are eligible to take advantage of qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) and donate up to $100,000 per year to one or more charities like Animal Protective League and save yourself the hassle of being pushed into a higher tax bracket caused by required minimum distributions (RMDs).

If you have an individual retirement account (IRA), when you turn 73, you’ll be required to start taking out required minimum distributions each year even if you don’t need the money! This extra income can put you at risk of losing or limiting your tax deductions, it can trigger phaseouts and high taxes on social security income and more.

Now, don’t stress out. Qualified charitable distributions could be the solution you’ve been waiting for! Since qualified charitable distributions don’t raise your taxable income, you can avoid all of the potential threats to your tax advantages that often come with required minimum distributions and instead, you can send that money to a charitable organization that you love.

“How can I make a qualified charitable distribution?”

A QCD can be made directly from any of the following individual retirement accounts to the charity of your choice:

  • Traditional IRAs

  • Inherited IRAs

  • Inactive Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) Plans

  • Inactive Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE) IRAs

The custodian of the IRA can send a check or an electronic transfer directly to the charity. If you choose to send a check, please be sure that your name is listed clearly on it. If you choose to send an electronic transfer of funds, please reach out to our executive director, Deana Corbin, in advance by email at dcorbin@apl-shelter.org or by phone at 217/544-7387 or ext.224.

Make 2026 the year that you make your life easier and the lives of vulnerable dogs and cats happier and more comfortable.
